Research libraries are operating in an era of unprecedented change and opportunity.

In order to respond, library leaders need to understand the environmental changes which will impact on the shape of libraries to come. They also need to embrace new ways of leading, in order to effectively deal with new opportunities and challenges.

When it comes to Open Science & Scholarship, libraries are well placed to take the lead in their institution by working with both the institutional leadership and the research community.

LIBER's Role

LIBER will work to equip future and current library leaders with the skills they need to take the lead, and to position their library at the heart of innovative and open research environments.

Specific Goals

Develop leadership capacity in LIBER senior members

Action #1: Support leadership development at management level in libraries.

Action #2: Help senior librarians address major challenges in rapidly changing digital, educational and research environments.

Action #3: Strengthen and facilitate networking between attendees of LIBER leadership events.

  • Deliverable #1: Activate the network (Leadership seminar and Journées) through networking events (In progress). Indicator: Number of networking events. Evidence of use of mailing lists.

Empower LIBER members to develop and provide access to digital collections

Action #1: Support best practice and networking.

Action #2: Liaise with related European events and initiatives.

  • Deliverable #1: Joint event on digital collections (Will be done in 2016). Indicator: Number of events per year.

Action #3: Involve more members in EU projects related to digital collections.

  • Deliverable #1: Activate the network (2017). Indicator: Number of LIBER members involved in EU projects.

Embed LIBER libraries in innovative research environments and position them as key partners in supporting research and education

Action #1: Support best practice and networking.

  • Deliverable #1: Annual workshop giving support for research and education, toolkits (2016). Indicators: Number of participants. Availability of documents on the LIBER website. Availability of toolkits on the LIBER website.

Action #2: Liaise with other European events and initiatives.

  • Deliverable #1: Joint event on support for research and education (2017). Indicator: Number of events per year.

Action #3: Involve more members in EU projects related to support for research and education topics.

  • Deliverable #1: Activate the network (2017). Indicator: Number of LIBER members involved in EU projects.
