LIBER works with the cultural heritage website Europeana on several EU-funded projects, and many of LIBER’s members contribute content to Europeana. Now, however, funding for Europeana and its related services is under threat because of proposed budget cuts.
The proposed cuts affect the European Commission’s Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). It provides financing to many services, including Europeana.
Europeana and its related projects currently cost €30 million a year; nearly a third of the proposed new €1 billion budget for the CEF from 2015. Previously, the CEF had €9 billion in funding to share with Europeana and other programmes working to improve health, justice and online safety.
If Europeana loses its funding, the hard work already put in to build Europeana into an innovative and unique resource will be lost.
