In the first Europeana Newspapers Workshop participants discussed challenges that arise when making digitised historical newspapers fully searchable. Newspapers were not meant to last, but are an extremely valuable source of information for libraries to preserve. They inform about everyday life and are of interest to researchers as much as to the general public. In this workshop the Europeana Newspapers Project shared best practices in structuring unstructured data, aligning different formats of metadata, tagging named entities and setting requirements for the quality of OCR.
