It is with great sadness that LIBER notes the passing of Erland Kolding Nielsen, Director of the Royal Danish Library. As a long-time avid supporter, Vice-President of LIBER from 1999-2002 and President from 2003-2006, Erland contributed significantly to LIBER’s work.
He generously gave LIBER a home for its first permanent secretariat at the Royal Library in Copenhagen, and actively participated in many of LIBER’s Annual Conferences. Erland was made an honourary member of LIBER in 2009.
LIBER President Kristiina Hormia-Poutanen remembers Erland as an ambitious and talented man, with a kind spirit and limitless curiosity.
“His ability and passion to drive change are clearly visible in making the Black Diamond, the magnificent library building, a reality, as well as in library unification processes he successfully co-ordinated, such as the formation of the joint National Library of Denmark and Copenhagen University Library,” she said.
Paul Ayris, former LIBER President and current adviser to LIBER’s Executive Board, said: “Erland was a champion for research and libraries and, with his passing, we have lost a giant in the European library space”.
