Having access to large sets of data is key to successful project bids under S.O. 4.4.
LIBER attended the ICT-2011 Call 8 Information and Networking Day – Intelligent Information Management in Luxembourg on the 26th of September to find out more about the big data challenge.
LIBER presented at the matchmaking session at the recent ICT-2011 Call 8 information and networking dayin Luxembourg.
This particular call, which is part of the 7th Framework Programme, focuses on S.O. 4.4 the ‘big data challenge’. Big data is is data that becomes large enough that it cannot be processed using conventional methods.
S.O. 4.4 consists of 5 target outcomes:
a) Reactive algorithms, infrastructures and methodologies for scaling data intensive techniques up to extremely large data volumes and real time performance. Rigorously tested on extremely large and realistically complex data sets coming from diverse resources contributed by organisations with a clear stake in the solution and a clear path to deploying it if effective.
b) Intelligent integrated systems that directly support decision making and situation awareness by dynamically integrating, correlating, fusing and analysing extremely large volumes ofdisparate data resources and streams. Evaluated against the concrete requirements of relevant professionals and communities and tested on appropriately- sized user groups and extremely large data resources from the respective domains (e.g.finance, engineering, government, geospace, transport, urban management).
c) Framework and tools for benchmarking and exploring information management diversity and comparing and optimising the performance of non mainstream data management architectures and computing paradigms, novel data structures and algorithms on extremely large volumes of data.
d)Targeted competition framework speeding up progress towards large scale information management systems of global relevance.
e) Community building networks and other initiatives designed to link technology suppliers, integrators and leading user organisations.
Although very technical in nature, the key to a successful bid under this call is access to and involvement of stakeholders with large data sets. There were several technical partners interested in exploring news ways to exploit library data on a large scale.
