Managing Research Software

With FAIR data being firmly established in the research and research support landscape, attention for research software has been growing. Researchers and Research Software Engineers have recognised that research software, like data, has to be managed, stored, shared and safeguarded. But research software has specific requirements that are different from managing research data. In this webinar, we will discuss what is research software, what requirements exist around managing it, and how one can write Software Management Plans.

  • Dr. Naeem Muhammad works as a Research Data Manager at KU Leuven University in Belgium. He holds a PhD in Software Engineering and has been actively engaged in research data management since 2007. His expertise spans FAIR data audits, the design and implementation of Research Data Management (RDM) workflows, and the implementation of funders’ RDM and FAIR data requirements. Naeem is actively involved in promoting best practices in RDM and contributes to national and international communities focused on Open Science, FAIR principles, and data stewardship. At KU Leuven, he coordinates the Book-a-Data-Manager RDM service, supporting researchers in navigating the complexities of RDM throughout the research lifecycle.
  • Teresa Gomez-Diazis a CNRS Research Engineer at the Gaspard-Monge Computer Science laboratory (LIGM) at the University Gustave Eiffel (Est of Paris), where her mission is to render Research Software and Research Data production visible and accessible in the context of Open Science. Thus, she works there on how to improve the development and dissemination conditions of the LIGM productions since 2006.She participated in the national PLUME project (2007-2013) where it was developed a research software catalog and contributed to the proposal of the PRESOFT Research Software Management Plan Model in 2018.In collaboration with Prof. T. Recio (University Nebrija, Madrid) since 2018, she has proposed the CDUR evaluation protocols for research outputs, and the definition of Open Science as the political and legal framework where research outputs are shared and disseminated in order to be rendered visible, accessible, reusable. She is currently working on further Open Science and Research on Research issues. See her website.
  • Moderator: Elisa Rodenburg is a Research Data Steward and the coordinator of the RDM Support Desk at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Having a background in history, she worked in the reading room of the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam and as a librarian for a symphony orchestra before joining VU Amsterdam as a Research Data Management officer.Elisa is passionate about improving support for RDM and streamlining support across all departments of the VU. She is also keen to learn from and contribute to international expertise and development around RDM and Open Science practices, skills and support. Alongside, she co-chairs the LIBER Research Data Management Working Group.
