The Call for Papers for the upcoming LIBER Annual Conference is now open. The deadline for submitting a proposal has been extended until the 31st of January 2022. Guidance on this as well as conference topics are outlined in detail below. LIBER 2022 Annual Conference Theme: Libraries in the Research and Innovation Landscape — Supporting, Partnering, Leading.

“To ask why we need libraries at all, when there is so much information available elsewhere, is about as sensible as asking if roadmaps are necessary now that there are so very many roads.” – Jon Bing

Research libraries are undoubtedly at the heart of the research life cycle and at the core of providing support to researchers, university staff, students, and citizens. This role has been reinforced over the past few years while research libraries have been increasingly involved in the field of Open Science.

It is evident that research libraries are currently evolving and growing quite quickly, from a supporting role to a more consistent one: they are becoming increasingly recognised as valued partners and key players that not only support but co-develop initiatives, programmes, and labs — providing services not only for individual researchers but research itself, through grants, specific research programmes, data librarians and data stewards supply, as well as dedicated tools, for instance. Libraries are nowadays trusted partners in the research field and can lead the way by developing innovative partnerships and supporting research via sharing best practices, fostering communities, and providing tailored services.

Libraries are also increasingly recognised as key partners in research, through their participation in organisations such as LIBER, and by being present and represented in national and international initiatives like the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) and several Horizon Europe 2020 projects.

As a result, research libraries play a growing role in the research and innovation landscape for the benefit of their research community.

 Topics & Types of Work

The upcoming LIBER 2022 Annual Conference will address the following topics:

  • Libraries as research institutions;
  • Citizen science and research communication;
  • Partnering with other organisations and the private sector;
  • Community building for researchers;
  • Research libraries as publishers;
  • Role of research libraries in bibliometrics;
  • Special collections in research libraries.

We Invite Submissions That Are:

  • Future-oriented, thought leadership pieces arising out of current research;
  • Research papers presenting theoretical solutions, with a clear illustration on how these solutions can be applied;
  • Work-in-progress initiatives or pilot descriptions, sufficiently mature to warrant attention;
  • Experiences and case studies specifying requirements, challenges or opportunities;
  • Best practices.

Session & Presentation Formats

LIBER 2022 will include several session and presentation formats. When submitting a paper, speakers can choose the best format for the content they intend to deliver. Speakers can choose the most appropriate format from the below list:

  • Papers presenting research, best practices, and case studies, which cover the methods used and open a discussion on the topic;
  • Lightning talks in a format such as Pecha Kucha;
  • Posters for a visually-inspiring display of the given initiative, its process, and results.

Proposals for a Panel Session

We also invite ideas for a panel session, consisting of 3 – 4 brief and engaging presentations related to the theme and the topics of the conference.

Please submit your proposal (abstract length max. 500 words) via email to: liber2022@libereurope.org. The Conference Programme Committee (CPC) will review all submitted ideas and select the proposal which best fits the overall conference programme.

Note: For all proposals, the CPC may, in some cases, accept an abstract while proposing an alternative format from the initially selected one if it fits better within the programme. In this case, the author will be consulted.

Selection Criteria

The CPC will select abstracts based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance to the Call for Papers;
  • Levels of originality and innovation;
  • Impact on the wider library community.

How to Submit Your Abstract

To submit an abstract, please visit the LIBER 2022 submissions portal. The deadline for submitting a proposal has been extended until the 31st of January 2022

Guidance and Notes on Submitting

  • Accepted contributions will be limited to one paper and/or poster abstract per author. Similarly, we aim to avoid more than one paper on a single initiative/project.
  • Submissions advertising commercial products and/or services will not be considered.
  • All submissions will be automatically considered for the LIBER Innovation Award.
  • Abstract length should be a minimum of 250 words and should not exceed 500 words (for all forms suggested above).
  • Only submissions in English will be considered, in line with the official language of the conference.
  • All submitted abstracts (except for the panel proposals) will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers, based on the criteria mentioned above.
  • Authors are encouraged to submit their accepted papers for publication in LIBER Quarterly, a fully peer-reviewed journal. Instructions for this can be found on the journal website, as can contact details for LIBER Quarterly’s managing editor.
