Job Opening – Communication Intern at LIBER

LIBER— Europe’s largest network of research libraries — has an exciting opportunity for an intern who is interested in non-profit communication as well as in topics relating to research/libraries/science/education, and who wants to be actively involved in engaging with our community

LIBER is facilitated by an ambitious and international office team. To support our wide range of communication activities, we are looking for a Communication Intern to join our team.

What will you do

This internship is suitable for students based/registered in the Netherlands. The successful candidate will work with the LIBER team to help us reach the goals of our 2023–2027 Strategy. Specifically, the intern will support the promotion of our flagship event, the  LIBER Annual Conference (1-3 July 2026), which will take place in Trondheim, Norway. 

The intern will also be engaged in a range of communication activities (social media, website content, mailing campaigns etc.) as well as community outreach to our 400+ member libraries. 

Your tasks, amongst others, will include: 

  • Social Media: support day-to-day management of LIBER’s social media channels, help plan content calendars, monitor engagement 
  • Newsletters: help compile and draft mailings and newsletters sent to LIBER’s network; 
  • Webinars: monitor session registration and increase promotion as necessary; 
  • Website: create, edit and publish content on LIBER websites; 
  • Contribute to daily communication and marketing activities along with event support during conference week. 

Timeframe

We aim to have an intern for 3-4 months – from the beginning of April to after the Annual Conference has concluded in mid-July. The expected weekly commitment is between 16-20 hours. 

Your profile

  • Studying communication, library studies, media studies or similar, or show an interest in communication in an international organisation; 
  • Residing and eligible to work in the Netherlands for the full duration of the internship;
  • Fluent in English with excellent communication and writing skills; 
  • Digitally confident; quick to pick up and work with different platforms and software (Canva/design skills are a plus) 
  • Able to work independently as part of a small, enthusiastic, and international team; 
  • Available for 3-4 months as from April 1, 2026. 

We offer you

Becoming our Communications Intern is an exciting opportunity at the heart of LIBER’s operations. You will contribute to the development and execution of our communication strategy for the Annual Conference and other communication activities. In this role, you will gain first-hand knowledge of several marketing tools and have the opportunity to contribute to the work of an international library association as well as help highlight the work of the LIBER community and European research libraries. 

You will be guided by LIBER’s Communication Coordinator, and by other members of the LIBER Office. The successful candidate will learn extensively about communication in an international membership organisation. 

An internship agreement will be drawn up together with the intern and Executive Director. This internship offers an allowance of 375 euros gross per month (based on a working week of 20 hours) for interns enrolled in a higher-education degree programme. 

Special working conditions

LIBER is located in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, in The Hague. We typically work in the Office two days per week and work remotely for the remaining days. As a result of our events, occasional out-of-hours working (including weekends) is possible. Specifically, the successful candidate will be invited to attend the Annual Conference in Trondheim, Norway, from 1-3 July 2026 (with travel costs fully reimbursed)

LIBER is the largest network of research libraries in Europe. The association has grown to include around 400 research libraries in 40 countries. Together we work to represent the interests of European research libraries, their universities, and their researchers. Between 10-15 Working Groups are simultaneously working on topics relating to the LIBER Strategy and are the lifeblood of the LIBER community. Events like the LIBER Annual Conference and Winter Event bring the community together.
