LIBER Supports an Open Science Cloud for Research
As part of its Digital Single Market Strategy, released on 6 May 2015, the European Commission announced its intention to launch a European Cloud as a way of achieving the aim of maximising the growth potential of the digital economy.
Since then, Commissioners Günther Oettinger and Carlos Moedas have elaborated on their plans to create an ‘Open Science Cloud’ for research. Their vision is to combine existing and future data infrastructures, offering secure and seamless access to European researchers for storing, managing and processing data from different sources.
LIBER has today signed a joint statement, written in collaboration with EUDAT, OpenAIRE, GÉANT and EGI, in support of this development. The statement outlines eight elements for success in ensuring a concrete contribution to realising the Digital Single Market.
LIBER will shortly follow this joint statement with a statement of principles to which we believe the Open Science Cloud must adhere, in order for an Open Science ecosystem — with research libraries and the communities they support at its heart — to thrive.
