Meet the Candidates for LIBER Executive Board
LIBER is pleased to release video messages of the outstanding candidates running for the three open positions on the LIBER Executive Board.
The LIBER Executive Board leads the strategic direction of the organisation and drives forward our mission to support research libraries throughout Europe. In 2025, six individuals stepped forward as candidates for the Board. On this page, you’ll get to know each candidate and learn about their background, experience, and reasons for applying. Below the videos, you can find short biographies of each candidate. We sincerely thank all candidates for their interest and commitment.
The election for the LIBER Executive Board seats will be held during the Meeting of Participants at the LIBER Annual Conference 2025 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Ann-Sofie Axelsson
Associate Professor Ann-Sofie Axelsson is Head of the Department of Communication and Learning in Science and Library Director at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden.

Dagnija Baltina
Dagnija Baltiņa is the National Librarian, Director of the National Library of Latvia (NLL) since September 2024. She is an internationally recognised expert in cultural heritage, with previous roles including Head of the NLL’s Special Collections Department, Secretary General of the Latvian National Commission for UNESCO, and Vice President of the UNESCO Executive Board.
She holds Master’s degrees from Harvard University and Brandenburg Technical University and is currently a PhD candidate in History at the University of Latvia. Dagnija Baltiņa has led major research initiatives at the NLL and strengthened its international partnerships, focusing on the preservation of heritage and evolving the role of libraries in society

Kathrin Brannemann
Since November 2020, Kathrin Brannemann is Library Director at the Niedersächsische State and University Library Göttingen in Germany.
From 2005 to 2010, Kathrin worked at the Library Consortia Center of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Cologne. There she headed the Digital Publication Systems department. Her work focused on project coordination for the technical implementation of library services such as electronic repositories, open access journals and long-term archiving for academic libraries.
In 2010 she moved to the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) in Bremerhaven as a scientific employee to take up her position at the Open Access Coordination Office in the Helmholtz Association. Her activities included working on two EU projects, both of which dealt with the handling and use/long-term availability of research data. From 2013 to 2017, she worked as subject librarian for history and archaeology at the University Library of the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg and as director of the Oldenburg University Archive. From November 2020 onwards she managed the library at the AWI in Bremerhaven.
Among other things, she is an alumna of the LIBER Emerging Leaders Programme and the Helmholtz Academy for Executives.

Monica Crump
Monica Crump is University Librarian at the University of Galway, in which role she is responsible for leading the Library team in the delivery of the Library Strategy. A particular focus of her current work is the planning of a new Library Building, Teaching and Learning, as well as providing collections and spaces for individual, focused study.
Monica has nearly 30 years’ experience working in higher education, as a librarian and a researcher. She has particular interests in the ever-evolving world of scholarly communications and publishing, as well as the alignment and development of teams to deliver institutional strategic goals and support evolving user needs.
Monica holds a B.A. in Computer Science, Linguistics and German (TCD), a Masters in Library and Information Science (UCD), and has completed an evening B.A. in French (University of Galway). She is an elected member of University of Galway’s Governing Authority (Údarás na hOllscoile), Deputy Chair of the Irish Research e-Library IReL Advisory Committee and a member of the LIBER Leadership Programmes Working Group.

Alicia Fátima Gómez
Alicia Fátima Gómez is Library Director at IE University (Spain), and specialises in Open Science, research data management, and research assessment. She is also a member of the LIBER Open Access Working Group and new LIBER AI Task Force.

David Tréfás
David Tréfás is Head of Modern Collections at the University Library of Basel. He is member of the LIBER Leadership Programmes Working Group and volunteers for IFLA, as well as the Swiss library association.
