Co-Creating a Roadmap for Capacity Building on Open Science and Citizen Science for Research Libraries

Citizen Science has collaboration at its core and represents innovative ways in connecting Open Science with society.  Many citizen science practitioners identify communication between all involved in projects as the biggest challenge of all. Following LIBER’s Open Knowledge Activities and the Vision-building workshops in the context of the INOS project, the role of research libraries in Citizen Science projects has been identified. But how do research libraries contribute to capacity building, not only for their staff but also for academic staff, researchers and students? This session aims to serve as a brainstorming tool for co-creating a Roadmap for capacity building on Open Science and Citizen Science for research libraries.

Is this a brainstorming session for me?

This brainstorming session aims to bring together library management, librarians, individuals involved in the creation of training programmes and resources for the support of Open Science and Citizen Science, and project teams collaborating with libraries in the organisation of Citizen Science activities.

What will be discussed?

This brainstorming session will result in the co-creation of a Roadmap for capacity building on Open and Citizen Science in research libraries, which will serve as the basis for wider consultation. The items for discussion will include:

  • Defining the strategic objectives for research libraries for capacity building on Open and Citizen Science;
  • Identifying the necessary skills building on existing (or under development) frameworks and guidance for research libraries (such as Librarian’s Guide to Citizen Science; Open Science Skills visualisation; Case Studies on Open Science Skilling and Training Initiatives in Europe);
  • Discuss the existing capacity building landscape in libraries and identify future actions for skilling on Open Science and Citizen Science;
  • Address existing barriers and ways to tackle them;
  • Identify the main roles/actors for capacity building on Open Science and Citizen Science in research libraries.

What will be the format?

Following a short presentation, the participants will collaborate in group mapping exercises. You are encouraged to participate with an open camera and microphone, although you will also be able to contribute with online collaborative notes.

INOS is funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and aims at integrating Open and Citizen Science into active learning approaches in Higher Education.
