Maria Rehbinder works with Intellectual Property related legal questions concerning copyright, trademarks and design right. She advises on legal questions related to research data and personal data, and works with issues related to open science, open access publishing and open data.

She drafts agreements concerning copyright and other intellectual property, has responsibility for her university’s trademark portfolio in the role of in-house counsel, participates in the drafting of copyright policies and intellectual property strategy, co-operates with stakeholders regarding intellectual property questions, and advises start-up companies on intellectual property issues.

Maria serves as a member in the Copyright Commission and the Copyright Council of the Ministry of Education and Culture and as a member in the Rights ManagementCommittee of Open Research and Science 2014-2017 initiative of the ministry. She works for Art University Copyright Advisory service provided by Aalto University and University of the Arts Helsinki, and advises Metropolia UAS.

I lecture on copyright, intellectual property and legal matters related to open access publishing, research data management and personal data and open science issues. In my work I see in practice how European copyright law harms use of research data and the open science goals of EU. I feel that copyright law has to be amended to enable research and innovation, both as a person working with researchers and innovators and as a mother of two teenagers, whom I hope can work in a flourishing Europe. EU copyright legislation has become a tool to support only one industry, commercial publishing, and I want to participate in the advocacy of universities and research libraries.
