LIBER Libraries Involved in OpenAIRE2020

Services to support a more open scholarly communication need to be built on top of the wealth of Open Access content that repositories have collected so far. One way in which OpenAIRE is doing this is by testing a funding mechanism for covering APC fees for publications released after their project end-date.

LIBER’s Role

LIBER leads the implementation of the EC/OpenAIRE FP7 Post-Grant Open Access Pilot. The pilot is distributing a €4 million budget for funding Open Access publishing fees for publications arising from over 8,000 finished FP7 projects across Europe.

Our involvement in the OpenAIRE2020 project relates to two Strategic Directions in LIBER’s 2018-2022 Strategy: Innovative Scholarly Communication and Research Infrastructure.

The Project

OpenAIRE2020’s goal is to implement European Commission Open Access policies and increase their impact by extending the infrastructure that makes it possible to manage and monitor EC-funded research.

This social and technical infrastructure will support the Open Access policies in Horizon 2020 via a range of pan-European outreach activities and a suite of services for key stakeholders. It will provide researcher support and services for the Open Data Pilot and investigate its legal ramifications. While offering national funders the ability to implement OpenAIRE services to monitor research output, OpenAIRE2020 will engage with innovative publishing and data initiatives via studies and pilots. By liaising with global infrastructures, it will also ensure international interoperability of repositories and their valuable OA contents.
