LIBER Signs the Barcelona Declaration
Joining more than 80 organisations, LIBER Europe signs the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information, supporting the plea to set openness of research information the norm.
Openness about the conduct and communication of research information is a core value of LIBER and our member network of European research libraries. Formulated as one of the key components in the LIBER Strategy 2023-2027, we believe in fostering diverse, inclusive, and sustainable access to research while stimulating advancing practices for open science. In line with the Declaration, we advocate for openness to become the default for scholarly work and research information.
The strive for openness is reflected in many of our activities, including the Open Access, Copyright and Legal Matters, Research Data and Educational Resources Working Groups as well as international projects PALOMERA, DIAMAS and ORE. On the matter, LIBER President, Julien Roche highlights the transformative effect of openness on science and information, and the urgent need to develop and sustain open services and infrastructures to match the needs of the research community.
The Barcelona Declaration was first launched in April 2024, setting out four concrete commitments:
- We will make openness the default for the research information we use and produce
- We will work with services and systems that support and enable open research information
- We will support the sustainability of infrastructures for open research information
- We will support collective action to accelerate the transition to openness of research information
By signing the Declaration, LIBER reaffirms its commitment in promoting open and transparent research practices. Aligning with our mission, we are proud to support the initiative that aims to transform the way research information is used and produced.
