RDM Workshop Report – LIBER Winter Event

Posted: 19-04-2023 Topics: Winter Event 2022 Research Data Management

During the LIBER Winter Event 2022, the Research Data Management (RDM) Working Group organised a workshop with the aim of mapping the skills and qualifications that library professionals need for successful data management and training development.

The workshop was divided into two parts; presentations and group discussions. The cohort consisted of professionals from both LIBER libraries as well as members of other Working Groups. The collaborative design of the workshop encouraged participants to share ideas and answers in pairs and among the whole group.

Outcomes

The participants developed a roadmap of four core skills that library professionals consider as potential areas for development. These skills were divided into four major groups:

  • Soft skills
  • Disciplinary skills
  • Technical skills
  • Legal skills

To conclude the session, participants offered suggestions for future LIBER training events, and agreed on the four main skills and knowledge areas that RDM librarians should develop. The workshop highlighted the need for library professionals to carefully define their offered services and the required skills, and to position themselves as experts in the field of research data management.
